What is ITAR?

ITAR is a federal regulation that restricts access to defense and military technologies, services, and goods — as specified in the United States Munitions List (USML) — only to U.S. citizens or those who have special authorization. Enforced by the Directorate of the Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) in the U.S. State Department, its purpose is to ensure national security by keeping sensitive technical data from falling into the hands of foreign nationals.

All third-party supply chain vendors and contractors involved in the manufacture, sale, and distribution of defense-related materials and services must also be ITAR-compliant, including wholesalers, distributors, and technology providers. In addition to the actual military goods and services, ITAR applies to paper document storage and transfer, as well as online technical data and digital communications between all parties.

Forum Plastics’ ITAR Compliance

Due to the stringent criteria of ITAR regulations, Forum’s facilities, offices, and data management have undergone a rigorous evaluation and enhanced security measures in order to establish compliance. As a result, all of our business and manufacturing processes have successfully been evaluated against this criterion and now will benefit all of our industry clients through an even more robust security system.

As a part of this approval process, Forum has generated a new, comprehensive ITAR compliance manual, which includes specific procedures that must be followed by each department to maintain security for ITAR projects. We have instituted special training to help new and existing employees understand how to adhere to our internal ITAR guidelines in every area of their jobs.

Only U.S. citizens are assigned to work with ITAR customers, with client and supplier communications restricted to secure portals and encrypted messaging platforms. Forum has reached out to its vendors, wholesalers, and service providers requesting ITAR compliance information from each organization.

In addition, we have instituted high-security, ITAR-compliant storage, management, and collaboration solutions to constantly monitor and prevent breaches of sensitive technical data for both paper and digital communications.

Periodic audits and reviews will be conducted to monitor ITAR compliance in every department.
